From an old record, I read that the first regular town meetings were held in the old meeting house at Old Fields. Humphrey Chadbourne was town clerk; Benjamin Nason, John Croude, Elisha Plaisted, James Emery and James Grant, selectmen; John Hooper, treasurer; Benjamin Nason, moderator June 9, 1713. Before this date, however, I find some interesting entries in the Old Parish Records. Benoni Bragdon held the position as sexton in the old church for a number of years. His contract read that he was to sweep out the place once in three months. An entry on Oct. 22, 1701 -- voted to build a new meeting house for the use of the inhabitants of the parish, finding the old house not worth repairing. Building committee: Capt. Ichabod Plaisted, Richard Tozier, John Hill, Thomas Abbott, Benjamin Nason, Chas. Frost, Nathan Lord, Humphrey Spencer, Benoni Hodsdon. Jan 27, 1703 -- Voted Daniel Emery and Nathan Lord a committee to give Mr. Wise, a minister in Saco, an invitation to preach in this parish. Mar. 5, 1707 -- Voted to build a meeting house 36 ft. square. Jan. 15, 1749 -- Voted to divide the parish. Feb. 27 1749 -- Voted that a meeting house be built in the North Parish the same size as the one in the South Parish.

In 1755 we find the North Parish at Blackberry Hill in full swing. In 1790 the South Parish tried to form itself into a separate town. The petition to the General Court was denied. A second attempt likewise failed, but a third attempt in 1813 succeeded. On March 22, 1831, North Berwick was incorporated as a separate town.
