Grace Berwick (1617-1694) Wife of William Ballardof Andover.  Arrived before 1641 (ship unknown) in Massachusetts from Bristol, England, before age 24.  She is thought to be the daughter of Thomas Berwick, a vintner in Bristol, and probably immigrated with her parents.  In 1641, Grace married William Ballard, and they settled in Andover, Mass., and they had 9 children, including John.  Her husband was a farmer, and later engaged in the war against the Narragansetts, better known as King Philip's War, in 1675-1676, at age 59.  William later died in Andover in 1689 at the age of 72.  Three years later, Grace was 74 in 1692 when the Salem Witch Trials began.  Her son John was the constable in Andover who, on 3 May 1692, served a warrant for the arrest of Martha Carrier (daughter of another T.C. Hudson Jr forebear, Dr. Roger Toothaker).  Martha Carrier was the first woman of Andover to be accused of witchcraft. That summer, Grace's other son, Joseph, sent word to Salem Village to fetch Ann Putnam (one of the young girl accusers of witches) to try to determine the cause of his wife's illness. Joseph later accused Mary Lacey and her 15 year old daughter Mary of causing his wife Elizabeth's "strange pains and pressures".  Grace died 2 years later in Andover, at the age of 76 and is buried in the Old Graveyard in Andover.
