He was among the first settlers of Somersworth, NH, now Dover. Jabez and his wife deeded July 7 1694 to Timothy Hanson 30 acres of land at Dover Neck, near Campion's Rocks, which her father gave to her. He, Jabez, by his mark, with others, witnessed a deed of 20 acres of land in Berwick, ME of James Emery to his son James. Jabez Garland's garrison at Winter Harbor, Biddeford, ME was taken by the french and indians after it was manfully defended August 10, 1703. Belknap's history of New Hampshire says his name was Jacob Garland not Jabez who was killed by the indians in Cocheco, on his return from public worship in 1710. It is presumed probable that Jabez Garland's name was changed from Jacob. Mass Historical Society Collection page 326, calls this Jabez, Jacob. Lived in Dover, NH.
