Our ancestors belonged to a third group of Powells that came from England and landed at the Massachusetts Bay Colony and were among the very early New Enlgnad pioneers. The first one to leave a definaite records is a Robert Powell, who came to Ipswich, MA from taunton, Somerset Enland in 1653. It is believed that his father was William Powell of Taunton.


The following is a letter brought into Court by Robert Powell: April 28, 1653: "Goodman Powell": Your son Robert it seems being willing to go into New England

England, hath spoken with my kinsman, Mr. John Goggeswell, of Ipswich, in New England, now with me, about his going thither as a servant to hire for six years, my cozzen to pay the passage to give him meat, drinke, and clothes in a fitting way and ten pounds in money after the expiration of his six years, and I will engage for you my kinsman will usage of your son and that he shall not sell him to any man else. Because I am not known to you you may enquire of Mr. Randall, who I am and he will sertife you, soe I rest. Tanton, Eng. Your friend unknown, Samuel Thompson"

Taunton engl. April 19 1653, endorsement on back: "the mark of Robert Powell's father and he have my good will" In the settlement of the estate of John Coggeswell, Robert Powell, sworn then about forty years of age, refers to the original indenture under which he came to Ipswich as a servant.

Robert's father-in-law, William More,conveyed to his daughter Mary Powell, wife of Robert of Ipswich,ten acres of land in Exeter,Jan.20 1660. William had a share in Plus Island & Co.1664.
