Wednesday, April 5, 1905, Newington, NH.

This is a remarkable story of the Nutter family told in another column by Jackson M. Hoyt of Newington. Mrs. Akerman who has just died, was a daughter of Matthias Nutter of that town, who was born in 1734, nearly two hundred years before the death of his daughter. It is doubtful if there is a parallel to this case in the history of the country. The death of Sarah Jane Ackerman, which occurred March 23 in Dorchester, Mass. brings to mind many things worthy to be given space in your much read paper.

Mrs. Ackerman was the last survivor of her fathers numerous progeny, numbering twenty-one children. Twenty lived to reach mans estate, and several attained an age remarkable for its longevity. Matthias Nutter, her father, was born in this town about 1734.

He and a younger brother were baptized by the Rev. Joseph Adams, Oct. 24, 1736. He served in one of the wars against the Indians and was a soldier in the Revolution, he was married three times, and died March 4, 1818, leaving a widow with 6 small children, the youngest not more than a year old. The widow died in 1871, at the age of 95 years having been a widow a little over 53 years.

Mr. Nutter's first wife was Martha Perkins, who bore him eight children. Capt. George Nutter, whom T. B. Aldrich mentions in his "Story of the Bad Boy," was one of these eight. Capt. James Nutter a well known carpenter and builder in Portsmouth 70 years ago was another, also Mrs. Joseph Warren Pickering, the grandmother of the Hon. Frank Warren Hackett, of Washington, D. C.

Matthias Nutter's second wife was a Widow Trickey. This union resulted in an addition of six more branches to the family tree, Joseph, Mark, Joshua, Annie, Abigail and Harriet. Joseph died June 20, 1863, the day he was 70 years old. Mark died in 1883 at the age of 83 years.

The last marriage took place May 14, 1807, and the bride's name as recorded in the town clerk's book was Polly Folsom. Seven children was the result of this matrimonial venture, one dying in infancy, the other six were blessed with long lives, overflowing with usefulness. William White Nutter, who died in 1883, at the age of 75 years, is remembered by many of our older people for his strict integrity, sound judgment and generosity.

He was for many years employed as overseer of the Rollins farm, on the line of the P. & D. railroad, now occupied by Dr. B. T. Prescott. Another brother Alfred Nutter, as resident of Lowell, Mass. died a few years ago.

The other children were Elizabeth, Lavina, Sarah J. and Olive. These last four when quite young left the old homestead and wended their way to Boston, where they sought and found employment and were afterwards happily married to worthy husbands.

Mrs. Akerman is survived by three children, one son and two daughters, George, Miss Lizzie and Mrs. Louise Allen. She was one of the few who in these latter days, could claim the distinction of being a real daughter of the Revolution. Her age was 90 years, and her remains were taken to Newburyport and buried by the side of her husband the late Benjamin Akerman.

The descendants of Matthias Nutter, as might be supposed are many and are scattered over this broad land. The children of Joseph and Mark settled in Wisconsin and California. James W. Nutter, a grandson of Capt. James Nutter, is an honored resident of Sac City, Iowa. He is 71 years old and has several grand children. His return to the Nutter homestead last August after an absence of 49 years, was an event of interest to us all. Mrs. George W. Young of Lakeport, still living at the age of 102 years is a grand daughter of Matthias Nutter and many others too numerous by far, to mention are living in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. submitted by Jan Nutter Alpert
