4 JOHN, by his naming a son, and by selling ‘Mosquito Hall,’ a large tract on Great Isl., it is conject. that he came on The Warwick. From Great Isl. he removed to Sturgeon Creek on invitation of John Treworgye, representing Mr. Alex. Shapleigh. Goodwife Heard kept Mr. Treworgye’s ho. while her husb. was building their ho. at the Creek. Altho on the Me. side of the river, he joined the Dover Combin. in 1640. He was always a devoted henchman of Maj. Shapleigh and was punished with him for opposing Mass, and for entert. Quakers. He was usually selectm. with Maj. Shapl. and in 1659 Com. t. e. s. c. Tr. j. 1640, 1645, 1647, 1650; Gr. j. 1645, 1649-51, 1653. Lists 41, 281, 282, 351b, 298. Recorder Rishworth disting. the two Johns, not uniformly, by spelling this one Herd, and he himself, altho usually signing by mark, in one deed appar. wrote his name Hord. 5 JOHN (Heard), master carpenter, never mariner nor captain. Age unkn., only as his w. was b. ab. 1628. In 1647 fined for calling Godfrey old knave and criticizing Capt. Champernowne; in 1650 he had lately been liv. on Champernowne’s Isl. in Kit., and was buying lands in York. Appar. he had built a ho. on Champernowne Isl. and on not getting his pay had burnt it; judgm. of Ct. Oct. 1650 that he replace as good and as large a ho. His deed from Mr. Hooke, 18 July 1650, recites that he had already built and fenced there. He had left York in June 1648, (Y. D. 3.71) when he sold his York ho. to John Parker, carpenter, of Marblehead, which may imply a prior acquaint., but was back again in 1651 (Gr. j. 1651-2).
