It is not known when or where Hope Allen arrived in New England. Very little information exists on his first two wives.

The first glimpse we get of Hope Allen is found in the Boston Town Records, Second Report of Record Commissioners of Boston:

The 29th 7 mo 1651 At a meeting this Day of the Select men Hope Allen a Currier is admitted an inhabitant - page 106

On May 14, 1660, Hope Allen and wife, Rachel Knight, of Boston sold their new dwelling house in Boston for 400 to Samuel Bennett. On May 31, he purchased 400 acres of land on the Casco River (now Portland, Maine) from George Cleeves.

Allen appears in court documents as well. On May 23, 1666, he petitioned the court that tanners and shoemakers may not exercise the trade of a currier. On May 31, 1670, he was fined 10 for allowing his daughter to marry Mr. Deacon without the prescribed form of being published.

His will was written in Boston on May 3, 1677 and may be seen in the Suffolk Probate Records. An inventory of his estate made on July 27, 1677 was valued at 660, exclusive of the property in Falmouth. This inventory can also be seen in the Probate Records.

Family with Rachel

Hope Allen's family with Rachel, with the exception of Edward and the daughter who married Mr. Deacon, are found on the Boston Records as follows:

Of the above, Jacob, Joseph, Rachel, Mary, and Benjamin were baptized at the First Church on July 16, 1666.

Family with Mary

Rachel died c. 1667. Hope then married Mary [unknown surname] c. 1669; she died in 1670. With Mary, Hope had one son:

Family with Hannah

Around 1671, Hope married Hannah Townsend, widow of Thomas Hull. Together, they had:

Death & Legacy

Hope died in June or July of 1677. His widow, Hannah, married Richard Knight c. 1683.

In his will, Hope Allen gave the 400 acres of land in Falmouth to his eldest son Edward and a portion to bis wife Hannah and children Jacob, Benjamin, Mary, Elizabeth, and Deborah. His youngest child, Hope Jr., was not then born. From this, it would appear that the rest of his children were deceased by the time of Hope Sr.'s death.
