According to a History of Henry Adams, Joseph C. was born in Barnstead, Feb 25 1815 and was married Oct 29 1839 to Sarah B. Nutter the daughter of James and Hannah (Langley) Nutter. He was a blacksmith in Newburyport for many years.

Joseph's father died in 1820 when he was only 5 years old. In October of 1821 the Strafford Court granted guardianship of Joseph (listed as Josephus in the court papers) and his siblings to his mother. Shortly after, also in1821, there was a notice in the paper that his father's 50 acre farm in Barnstead, NH was being auctioned to pay debts. I have also found the probate records ordering this sale as the estate owed $1200.

It is unknown what his mother may have done then and where they lived, though by 1837 it is presumed they were living in the Newington/Portsmouth area as that is where his sister Sally Ann drowned (she was 17 at the time).

In 1839, Joseph is listed in the city directory at 57 Daniel where he had a blacksmith shop. His mother was also living in town, at 25 Court St., Portsmouth.

Joseph and Sarah married in 1839 and during the 1840 Census they were enumerated, living together, in Portsmouth. It appears that there may have been another Joseph Adams living next to them as neighbors. That is unusual and I don't yet know who it could be.

By the 1850 Census, Joseph and his wife were living in Newburyport, MA and had 5 children, 5 daughters ranging in age from 9 (Sarah F my ancestor) to 2. Ariadna Nutter, Sarah's 24-year old sister was also living with them.

The State of MA held a Census in 1855. Joseph and his family were living in Ward 6 of Newburyport and a son had now been born (he was 3 at this time), so they had 6 children.

In the 1860 Census, Joseph's family was still with him in Newburyport and he is listed as owning $700 in real estate.

MA had another Census in 1865. All his children are still living with him. Joseph's mother had just died the year before, in 1864.

In the 1870 Census, Joseph and Sarah were in their 50s. It notes that he owns real estate valued at $400 and personal property valued at $1000. They have 4 adult children still living with them, no occupations listed for any of them. Annetta 28, Ada (assumed to be Ariadna) 22, and (Joseph) Gilman 18

According to the Municipal Register in Newburyport, MA for 1872, Joseph C. Adams was in the Common Council representing Ward 6. Joseph owned a home and blacksmith shop in 1872 located at 2 Merrimac Court.

In the 1880 Census, Joseph is still living with his wife, his daughter Emma who is 35 and listed as a saleswoman and a granddaughter Nellie M. who is 4. Nellie May's gravestone says she died in 1886.

Joseph's wife Sarah passed away Jan 11 1892. They had been married 53 years.

On the 1900 Census Joseph is enumerated in Newington, NH, with his daughter Sarah and her husband Frederick DeRochemont (my 3rd great grandparents), his daughter Annetta now 57, and Sarah and Fred's children Frederick (23), Harry (32) and Harry's wife Annie and their 3 children Mabel, John, and Lawrence.

In 1907 Joseph was living with his daughter Emily and her husband in Newburyport when he died at the age of 91 from heart disease. Emily did not know her grandmother's (Sally's) maiden name and misreported her grandfather's name as Joseph--though this is understandable as Ebenezer had died in 1820 when Joseph was only 5, long before Emily was born, so Emily never knew her grandfather. The newspaper stated that he had been returned to Newington for burial.

Joseph and Sarah are buried in Newington. Their granddaughter Nellie is buried beside them.

Based on Census and death records she was born approximately 1789 in Barnstead.

People online have listed that she was the daughter of George Colbath and Rebecca Milken, but I haven't been able to verify that. According to the census, in 1790, Dependence Colbath's family was the only Colbath family in Barnstead. There were nine people in the household; two males over 16, one under 16, and 6 females (one would have been Eleanor). So, Dependence probably had 2 sons and 5 daughters, although birth records have proved impossible to find. Unforunately, many of Barnstead's records were lost in a fire, so these may have been among them. I believe that Sally was the daughter of Dependnce and Eleanor.

Her husband, Capt. Eben Adams Jr. died 1 Jun 1820 (causes unkown)

Sally Ann, the youngest daughter, was born 13 Jul 1820 (yikes! a month after her husband died!)

On 12 Oct 1821, Sally was granted guardianship of her children following their father's death

The 50-acre farm owned by her husband in Barnstead was auctioned in 1821. His estate was insolvent. (see attached)

The1830 Census notes one Sally Adams and one young female living in Portsmouth. I am assuming this is OUR Sally, but what happened to the other children??

In 1837, Sally Ann, the youngest daughter dies in a tragic drowning in Portsmouth. The newspaper notes her mother and siblings. (see attached)

In 1839, her residence is listed in the city directory as 25 Court St., Portsmouth. Her son Joseph C is also in Portsmouth at this time, living not far away where he had a blacksmith shop at 57 Daniel

In 1860 she was living in Portsmouth with her daughter Mary Jane, and two granddaughters Sally Ann and Mary Jane.

Sally died from "consumption" on 25 Feb 1864. Her burial spot is unknown.

My questions????

How did Ebenezer die? He was so young!

What happened to Sally and the children after Ebenezer died?

I do NOT yet know enough about probate and land records but I'm guessing that Ebenezer got his land from the original Adams holdings (his great grandfather Rev. Joseph Adams). I'm thinking there would be a record of that?? Rev. Adams will left the land in Barnstead to Dr. Joseph Adams, Ebenezer's father. I can't find a probate record for Dr. Joseph Adams so far, but maybe there is some record of a land transfer to be found.

Also, that after he died, the court must have made some provisions for his children. Did they really leave them homeless and without any support? There must be some record.

Where did Sally come from? Who are her parents?


There are many online trees that connect George Colbath, son of Pitman Colbath, with a marriage to a woman named Jane and 4 daughters. These trees also indicate that George died in Barnstead in 1843. The problem is that I can find zero evidence of any of this other than a Betsey C. (Colbath) Garland, widow, born in 1794, who died in Medland, MA in 1863 of a lightning strike, and her parents are listed as George and Jane.

Now, there is a Betsey C. Colbath among the four daughters attributed to George Colbath, but she was living with her son Isaac Garland in Gilmanton, NH in both 1850 and 1860. It is possible that she had moved to Medland or was visiting Medland in 1863 when this lightning strike killed her, but it is also quite possible that her parents names were listed incorrectly.

Also, I can find no evidence that George, son of Pitman Garland, had any connection with Barnstead. He didn't actually die in Barnstead in 1843, he died in Portsmouth in 1853. Also, if he ever married a woman named Jane, there is no record of it. In fact, the Portsmouth Athenaeum (The Athenæum houses an outstanding collection of documents and artifacts relating to local history. It also preserves what is undoubtedly the finest collection in the state of materials relating to the history of New Hampshire’s only major seaport.) has a record for George (https://athenaeum.pastperfectonline.com/byperson?keyword=Colbath%2C%20George%2C%20c1759-1853) in which it attributes no children and lists him as unmarried (with a question mark).

The other daughters attributed to him are Jane Colbath born in 1782 in Barnstead, who married Daniel Sherburne.

Also a Hannah Colbath born in 1792 who married an Ezra Straw. They moved to Ohio and Hannah died theire in 1886. She was born in Portsmouth according to her obituary, but was married in Barnstead.However, Ezra was born in Barnstead, so this may account for that fact.

Finally, there is my ancestor Sarah Sally Colbath, born in 1789 in Barnstead, who married Ebenezer Adams Jr. of Barnstead in 1805, and died in Portsmouth in 1864. Ebenezer died in 1820 leaving her with young children to raise, and she never remarried, It would have been very difficult for a single mother in those years, so it makes complete sense that she moved her family to Portsmouth where there would have been more work than in Barnstead.

There are a few issues in resolving all of these inconsistencies, and the most significant is that the early vital records from Barnstead were lost in a fire. The second is that most of the early founding families of Barnstead had family ties in the Portsmouth/Newington areas, and I've found a lot of fluidity among them.

In my tree I have left George "married" to Jane, but only for research purposes, and have listed the four daughters I found in online trees. I have also listed Jane and Sarah Sally with Dependence and Eleanor, again, to aid with research, as explained below.

It is my belief that Jane and Sarah Sally were**very** likely the daughters of Dependence Colbath and Eleanor Walker. Dependence is from a branch of the family that was well established in Barnstead. He was, in fact, the only Colbath listed as a head of family in Barnstead in 1790 and the 1790 census lists them as having 2 sons and 5 daughters. We know they had one daughter Lydia, born in 1788 and died (unmarried) in 1832. She is buried with her parents in Barnstead. The two sons, it is believed were John and Dependence/Independence Jr. The names of the other four daughters living in 1790 are lost. As stated, I believe that two of them are Jane and Sarah Sally.

There seems to be some confusion in many online trees regarding two James Nutters.

James Nutter (c 1793-1881) of Portsmouth/Newington married Hannah Langley/Leathers. This James was the son of James Nutter and Elizabeth Seavey.

James Nutter (1795-1881) of Barnstead married Anna Nutter. This James was the son of John Nutter and Elizabeth Dame.

In my media files is a file including all the Nutter births in Barnstead that makes this distinction clear. MY James is the James from Newington/Portsmouth.

In 1830 a family of Jas Natter matching James' family (himself, wife, and 3 daughters in the right age groups) was living in Somersworth.

In 1840: James Nutter living in Newington had a household consisting of 3 sons (matching ages of Wolliam, Charle, and Edwin), a daughter matching the age of Ariadna - Sarah was married and Elizabeth was 19 and possibly on her own), and wife.

In 1850: James Nutter (age 56), a laborer born in NH owned $400 in RE and was in dweling # 777 in Newington, He was living with his wife Hannah (age 57) and 3 males William H (age 23), Charles H. (age 19) and Edwin M (age 15)

in 1860: James Nutter (67) a farm laborer owned RE valed at $750 and was in dwelling #890 in Newington. He was living with his wife Hannah (68) and a female Araidna N. (36)

In 1870: James Nutter (77) a farmer owned RE valued at $1000 and was in dwelling # 77 in Newington. He was living with his wife Hannah (78).

In 1880: James Nutter (86) was living in dwelling #49 in Newington with a female Annette Adams (37) noted as his granddaughter.

I've never found a birth record for James. But given his (supposed) mother's age (born in 1780) and marriage to James Nutter in 1797, I've come to believe that the online date of 1793 for James death is incorrect. I believe he was born in 1797.

Every online tree I have found have Hannah’s parents listed incorrectly. A transfer of deeds by Abednego Leather’s children and heirs in 1821, make it clear that Hannah is actually the child of Abednego Edwards and Elizabeth Woodward. I have not yet found a birth certificate, but this is the only reasonable explanation of relationships.

Inconsistency:The Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 asserts that The parents of Martha G. Witherell who died in 1896 at the age of 86 were Joseph Stevens of Lee, NH and Hannah Langley of Nottingham, NH.

Previous line of research:

I have come to believe that Hannah's maiden name was actually Leathers and not Langley.

The major fact this is based on is the Rockingham County deed Book 233 pp-48-52 in which Hannah is indicated as an heir to Abednego Leather's property. Additionally, her daugther Araiadna's birth record names her Hannah Leathers. We know that many 19th centure Leathers in NH changed their names because of the stigma it carried. Could this be true of Hannah? If so, it seems most likely that she was a daughter of Abednego Leathers (1770-?) and Sarah Sally Langley (1779-?), although in the deed, she is called out as an heir along with Polly, Abednego, Martha, Mehitable, and Charity as an heir. All of these individuals were children of Abednego Leathers (1742 - 1?) and Elizabeth Woodman (1745-1809). Due to birth dates, it seems impossible that she is of this generation, but why would she be the only one of the next generation named?
