    Notes:

The New Hampshire Marriage and Death Certificates indicate that Harry DeRochemont was born 18 Jan 1868 to Frederick W and Sarah F (Adams) DeRochemont. They were living in Newington at the time. Harry was the oldest child and by the 1880 Census he had 2 younger sisters and 2 brothers.

On 15 May 1895, Harry married Annie C. McKenzie from Prince Edward Island. He is shown as 27 on his marriage certificate and Annie was 18. It lists him as a farmer. They were married by clergyman Edward Robie in Greenland, NH. Annie's parents were John and Barbara McKenzie. Harry's first two children, Mabel and John were both born in PEI. But we know from newspaper reports and the births of the rest of his children that he was living back in Newington by 1899.

In 1900, Harry and Annie were enumerated in Newington, living with Harry's parents Frederick and Sarah, their three children Mabel (4), John (2), and Lawrence (1), Harry's brother Frederick Jr., his grandfather Joseph Adams, and his aunt Annetta Adams.

Sadly, Annie died in 12 Mar 1906, just 4 days after giving birth to their son Bernard. Tragically, Bernard only lived a few months and also died on 17 Oct 1906. He is buried next to his mother in the Newington Cemetery. She had given birth to three more children before she died, James, Orville, and Harry Jr.

In the 1910 Census, Harry and his 6 children were still living with his parents in Newington. Elizabeth Haughey, a 24-year-old girl from Ireland was living with them as a housekeeper.

On 18 July 1916, Harry married his second wife, also a widow - Edith G. (Bradstreet) Garland. In 1917, the city directory lists them living at 612 Market St., in Portsmouth.

During the 1920 Census, they were living at 412 Hunker St. in Portsmouth. Harry's 4 boys, John, Lawrence, James, and Harry were still living with them, as was Clifton Garland and EB Garland (2 children, presumably Edith's from her first marriage) and Calton Bradstreet (age 25).

Harry's father died in 1926 and then his mother died in 1928.

During the 1930 Census, Harry and Edith were living in Newington, and his daughter Mabel (34 now) was living with them. Edith died in 1934.

During the 1940 Census, Harry was living alone in Newington; his son John W. and 8 grandchildren were living next door. On this Census, Harry indicates he had completed just 5 years of school.

On 8 Jun 1946, at the age of 78, Harry died in Concord. He is buried in the Newington Cemetery near his first wife Annie. J. Verne Wood was the funeral director. Death certificate says he died from a cerebral hemorrage. He had chronic myocarditis and myocardial degeneration. The attending physician was Dr. Everett F. Lombard.

Harry worked as a toll collector.

    General Notes:
There was a notice of a marriage of Harry de Rochemont to Lena Fogg in the July 3, 1907 issue of the Portsmouth Herald although I have seen no other record to indicate that Harry had three wives. He was alone, widowed, in the Newington 1940 federal census. He was enumerated as being a mason's helper.

Harry married MACKENZIE, Annie C. on 25 May 1895 in Greenland, Rockingham, New Hampshire, USA. Annie (daughter of MACKENZIE, John and CORBETT, Barbara) was born on 5 Jan 1877 in North Granville, Prince, Prince Edward Island, Canada; died on 12 Mar 1906 in Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire, USA; was buried in Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire, USA. Notes:

According to Amelia Patch, Fred lost a leg and had a wooden one. The leg was cut off by the doctor while he was lying on the kitchen table, and the leg was buried in the back yard. Later, after he had recuperated, his wooden leg was bothering him. They went to the yard, dug the old leg up and there rubbing up against the bone was an English walnut! He insisted that the walnut was the thing that was bothering his wooden leg.

Frederick married ADAMS, Sarah Frances on 20 Mar 1867 in Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire, USA. Sarah (daughter of ADAMS, Joseph Colbath and NUTTER, Sarah Blanche) was born on 9 Aug 1840 in Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts, USA; died on 10 Dec 1928 in Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire, USA; was buried on 10 Dec 1928 in Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire, USA. Notes:

Sarah Frances Adams was born in Newburyport, MA on August 9, 1840 (date according to her gravestone), the oldest child of Joseph Adams, a blacksmith, and Sarah Nutter. She had 5 younger sisters and 1 brother, from 2 to12 years younger than her.

She appears on the 1850 Census living in Newburyport with her parents, siblings, and her 24-year-old aunt (her mother's sister).
She appears on the 1855 MA census living with her family, still in Newburyport.

On 20 Mar 1867, Sarah married Frederick William deRochemont of Newington. They were married in Middleton, MA.

By the 1870 Census, Sarah was living in Newington with her husband, their 2 year old son Harry and 8 month old daughter Amelia. Frederick is listed as working as a fire insurance agent.

I don't know if they moved into the house as soon as they were married, but at least later in their marriage they lived in a house on Fox Point Rd.

By the 1880, 3 more children had been born, Windelina, Frederick W. , and Joseph, for a total of 5 children in the family. Harry, at age 12, is the only child listed as attending school. Amelia at age 10 was not. The other children were all too young still. On this Census, Frederick is listed as a farmer. Frederick's younger brother Herbert and his wife Olive lived next door with their 2 year old daughter Charlotte.

Sarah's mother died in 1892. She is buried in the Newington Cemetery.

By 1900, Fred and Sarah were near 60. Harry was married by this time and living with them along with his wife Annie and their 3 children Mabel (4), John (2), and Lawrence (1). Frederick Jr. was still living with them. Sarah's father Joseph C and her sister Annetta had also come to live with them.

In 1903, the Portsmouth Herald noted on May 7 that "Mrs. S. F. deRochemont returned on Tuesday from a visit to Newburyport where she had been the guest of her father J.C. Adams." So by this time, it appears that Joseph had returned to live in Newburyport.

Sarah's father died in 1907. He is buried beside his wife in Newington.

The Portsmouth Daily Herald, on 12 Apr 1909, reported on Sarah's husband's 68th birthday party. It was Easter and his children and grandchildren came to his home to help him celebrate. The article says that he had suffered an accident early in life and had been severely crippled,. but had always played an active role in the community nonetheless. It says Fred was born in Newington in 1841 in the house that his brother was living in when the article was written.

In the 1910 Census Sarah and Fred were living with their son Harry (now 42) and his 6 children, ranging in age from 14-6. Harry's wife Annie had died in childbirth in 1906 and the baby died shortly after. There is also an Elizabeth Haughey, age 24 living with them. The Census says she was from Ireland and is their servant. Fred is still listed as a farmer and Harry as a watchman for the railroad.

In the 1920 Census their were just 2 grandchildren still living with Sarah and Fred, Mabel and Orville. Mabel was 23 by now and working as a teacher.

Fred died in 1926. Sarah died on 10 Dec 1928. Her death certificate says she died of chronic myocarditis. They are buried together in the Newington cemetery.

    General Notes:
Son Harry's marriage record says that Sarah was born in Newburyport. Son Frederick's says she was born in Portsmouth. It was more than likely Portsmouth since the Adams genealogy shows the first two children, Sarah and Anetta as being born in Portsmouth. The 1840 census shows a Joseph Adams in Portsmouth, none in Newburyport and the 1850 census shows Joseph C Adams in Newburyport. Sarah was called "Little Grammie" as she was a tiny woman.

    Notes:

Thanks to Debbie (Patch) Wilson for the following notes. These come from her extensive research which she provided to me on 5 Oct 2014 when I visited her home in Sandwich, NH:

Frederick William accompanied his uncle Carsten at about age fourteen to
Demerara to live with his father's sister and family. There he worked in a law
office. He fell in love with his first cousin, and despite the displeasure of the
family concerning a relationship this close, he married Maria Louisa de Wit.
When Maria Louisa's parents died twenty months apart, what was left of their
insolvent estate was left to the seven minor de Wit children (minority there lasted
until the age of 25). The Water Side House, so-called, was auctioned off and
bought by Frederick to pay outstanding bills, and twenty-five of the thirty-one
slaves were sold. Since Frederick had been given sole guardianship of the
minors, he handled the money and brought Maria's younger sisters and six of the
slaves north to the United States where they all settled in Newington. Maria's
brother Carsten joined them later. There is a copy of the receipt for the purchase
of the slaves. Frederic paid a total of 2735 guilders for six slaves: Cupido 890,
of the slaves. Frederic paid a total of 2735 guilders for six slaves: Cupido 890,
    Marianne 325, Calais 335, Isaac 375, Dick 475 and Jeannette 335.

In 1861 Frank Pickering and his wife Sophia De Rochemont instituted a suit
claiming that Frederick had not given the minors their fair share from the sale of
the property located at 310 Werken Rust as well as the slaves and had kept the
use of the remaining slaves left to the minors for himself. The Pickerings also
asked for compensation for the eleven years of labor and services that Sophia
had provided while living with Frederick and his family. There are on file at the
New Hampshire State Archives long depositions by all parties involved
concerning life in Demerara, the circumstances by which they came north, and
other vital facts, including the deposition that the minors had received a legacy
from Holland which amounted to about $32.00 apiece in the fall of 1841 or the
spring of 1842. The court eventually ruled that a husband could not sue for
property owned by his wife before the marriage, and it found in favor of the
    defendant Frederick William.

In the 1850 census are the following:
    F. De Rochemont 45
    Maria L. 39
    William H. 21
    Mariah L. 12
    Frederick W. 8
    Amelia 4
    Elizabeth 2
    Mariana DeWitt 80
    Sarah H. De Rochemont 72
    John Hodgdon 14

We know now that Mariana DeWitt in the 1850 Newington census was a slave.
She was brought from Demerara with others when Frederick brought his family
north and had been inherited by the DeWitt girls when their parents died. Several
of the slaves are buried in the garden behind the Derochemont house (I believe
Percy's house). Sarah H is Sarah Ham Moses Derochemont, Frederick's mother.
In the 1860 census Frederick was listed as the postmaster. He held this position
in Newington almost all of his life.

In the 1870 census, there was a domestic girl named Mary Loheed with Fred and
Maria Derochemont in Newington. She was 17, born MA. Mystery solved! The
New Hampshire Genealogical Record, Jan/April 2012 included in its articles"Girls
Sent to New Hampshire From the Boston Asylum.". In it was find Mary Loheed.
July 1857: widow named Mrs. Loheed had brought two little girls to the Asylum.
Her husband had recently died leaving her with four children whom she now felt
unable to maintain. The committee admitted Catharine Ann and Mary Anne
Loheed. In June of 1863 Mrs Loheed applied to take Catharine, now more than
12 years old. It was granted. In February of 1865 Mrs Penhallow of Portsmouth
applied for Mary Anne and she was bound to Mr and Mrs Penahallow. However,
in November of the same year, "Mr FW de Rochemont from Newington made
application for Mary Anne Loheed. He brought two recommendations from
persons in the neighborhood" and it was voted to bound Mary Anne Loheed to Mr
    and Mrs de Rochemont.

We find in Boston births that Mary Loheed was born 20 Feb 1854, dau Thomas,
bootfitter born Ireland and Mary A also born Ireland. Her sister Catharine Ann was
    born 11 Nov 1850

    * In 1895 (546-372) Clarence borrowed $1400 from Henry A and son Harry B Yeaton and gave the property above, including the 14 acres as collateral. There are various tax liens on Clarence Derochmont property in Greenland somewhere in Packer's Bog. It was eventually given in a tax forfeit in 1979 by Clarence's estate.

    Notes:

Maria Louisa went to school with Celia Thaxter's mother at Susan Huntress' school. She raised her four younger sisters whom she brought north with her and her husband. She also brought several slaves, one of whom was named Nina and lived to be over 100 years old. They are buried in the garden of the DeRochemont home in Newington.

Marguerita Mazeau related that her father Percy told her that as Maria Louisa, called Louisa, became elderly, she remained most of the time in the upstairs bedroom in the home where Marguerita now lives which at that time belonged to Louisa's son Clarence. She was afraid most of the time that a strange man was going to get her and would scream about it. Marguerita has in her home a small wreath of dried flowers that Louisa supposedly wore at her wedding, a present from her brother who got it while in England. I do not know if it was from brother Carstin or brother Leonard who died ca 1829.

In the 1900 Newington census, Maria L was enumerated with Clarence and his family. It also states erroneously that both of her parents were born in Germany. It also states that she had a total of 12 children and that 6 were living as of 1900. I have only the names of 10 children for her.

    Notes:

According to a History of Henry Adams, Joseph C. was born in Barnstead, Feb 25 1815 and was married Oct 29 1839 to Sarah B. Nutter the daughter of James and Hannah (Langley) Nutter. He was a blacksmith in Newburyport for many years.

Joseph's father died in 1820 when he was only 5 years old. In October of 1821 the Strafford Court granted guardianship of Joseph (listed as Josephus in the court papers) and his siblings to his mother. Shortly after, also in1821, there was a notice in the paper that his father's 50 acre farm in Barnstead, NH was being auctioned to pay debts. I have also found the probate records ordering this sale as the estate owed $1200.

It is unknown what his mother may have done then and where they lived, though by 1837 it is presumed they were living in the Newington/Portsmouth area as that is where his sister Sally Ann drowned (she was 17 at the time).

In 1839, Joseph is listed in the city directory at 57 Daniel where he had a blacksmith shop. His mother was also living in town, at 25 Court St., Portsmouth.

Joseph and Sarah married in 1839 and during the 1840 Census they were enumerated, living together, in Portsmouth. It appears that there may have been another Joseph Adams living next to them as neighbors. That is unusual and I don't yet know who it could be.

By the 1850 Census, Joseph and his wife were living in Newburyport, MA and had 5 children, 5 daughters ranging in age from 9 (Sarah F my ancestor) to 2. Ariadna Nutter, Sarah's 24-year old sister was also living with them.

The State of MA held a Census in 1855. Joseph and his family were living in Ward 6 of Newburyport and a son had now been born (he was 3 at this time), so they had 6 children.

In the 1860 Census, Joseph's family was still with him in Newburyport and he is listed as owning $700 in real estate.

MA had another Census in 1865. All his children are still living with him. Joseph's mother had just died the year before, in 1864.

In the 1870 Census, Joseph and Sarah were in their 50s. It notes that he owns real estate valued at $400 and personal property valued at $1000. They have 4 adult children still living with them, no occupations listed for any of them. Annetta 28, Ada (assumed to be Ariadna) 22, and (Joseph) Gilman 18

According to the Municipal Register in Newburyport, MA for 1872, Joseph C. Adams was in the Common Council representing Ward 6. Joseph owned a home and blacksmith shop in 1872 located at 2 Merrimac Court.

In the 1880 Census, Joseph is still living with his wife, his daughter Emma who is 35 and listed as a saleswoman and a granddaughter Nellie M. who is 4. Nellie May's gravestone says she died in 1886.

Joseph's wife Sarah passed away Jan 11 1892. They had been married 53 years.

On the 1900 Census Joseph is enumerated in Newington, NH, with his daughter Sarah and her husband Frederick DeRochemont (my 3rd great grandparents), his daughter Annetta now 57, and Sarah and Fred's children Frederick (23), Harry (32) and Harry's wife Annie and their 3 children Mabel, John, and Lawrence.

In 1907 Joseph was living with his daughter Emily and her husband in Newburyport when he died at the age of 91 from heart disease. Emily did not know her grandmother's (Sally's) maiden name and misreported her grandfather's name as Joseph--though this is understandable as Ebenezer had died in 1820 when Joseph was only 5, long before Emily was born, so Emily never knew her grandfather. The newspaper stated that he had been returned to Newington for burial.

Joseph and Sarah are buried in Newington. Their granddaughter Nellie is buried beside them.

    • Name: Castin Cornelius de WIT

    • Ordained: 1811, Georgetown, Demerara-Mahaica, Guyana; Suger planter

    Notes:

In the 1 May 1894 Boston Daily Globe article titled "She Is No Yankee," it says that Castin Cornelius De Wit is descended from the family of John de Wit, governor of Holland. It describes him as a sugar planter with a schooner.

A small note in family papers reads, "Cornelius C. DeWit died Apr. 1. 1827. Buried on Plantation Le Resouvenir, east coast of Demerary Apr. 3. 1827. b June 25. 1780".

So far Castin Cornelius's line has not been found other than parents. As of 16 May 1807 Carsten and his brother with only the intitial "N" owned shares in Plantation Wittenberg. In 27 Oct 1804 LHH de Wit was the manager of Le Resouvenir.

The following information was extracted from Crowns of Glory, Tears of Blood, the Demerara Slave Rebellion of 1823 by Emilia Viotti da Costa.

"When all land along the river had been granted, the company distributed new grants along the coast, east and west of the mouth of the Demerara, in the areas that came to be known as the East Coast and the West Coast. A limit of 1,000 acres was established for sugar and 500 for coffee plantations. Before the area could be settled, a complicated system of canals, dams, and sluices had to be built to improve drainage--a task the Dutch were particularly qualified to accomplish. Plantations were laid out next to each other, with frontages of 100 roods [one rood= 12 feet] and depths of 750."

Demerara was incorporated into the British empire circa 1792. On the East Coast, the area between the Demerara River and Berbice, most plantations in the first part of the nineteenth century were producing mainly cotton although some were producing at the same time sugar, rum, cotton, and coffee. By 1813, 8% of the plantations had more than 300 slaves, 40% had between 200 and 300, and 46% had between 100 and 200.

Le Resouvenir belonged evidently to a Dutch planter named Hermanus Hilbertus Post. Unlike most of the planters, he was a pious man and invited a Methodist minister named Wray from the London Missionary Service to come and preach to the slaves. Post had been born in Utrecht in 1755 but had settled in Demerara. He quickly built a fortune which allowed him to travel to Holland and to live in New Rochelle, NY from 1791 to 1799. He returned in 1799 to take care of business in Demerara. Evidently he had undergone a religious conversion and made the religious instruction of his slaves a top priority.

Le Resouvenir was on the East Coast of Demerara, about eight miles from Stabroek which became Georgetown. In 1808 it "had a population of 375 slaves and about 700 acres, 225 of which were planted in cotton, 375 in coffee, and 100 in cocoa and provisions. The main building stood about a mile from the seaside, and behind it there was a canal leading to the back dam. Orange trees had been planted on each side of the canal. A green path shaded by rows of Mountain Cabbage trees led from the main house to the public road. Everything had been built or grown by slaves under Post's supervision."

Post built a chapel called Bethel Chapel on Le Resouvenir and a small missionary house as well. Slaves from surrounding plantations were allowed to attend the church services also. Most of the congregation was made up of slaves and a few white overseers. The local Dutch minister as well as other planters saw Post as a trouble maker. Many at Le Resouvenir only spoke Dutch, but most spoke English as well.

In 1809 Post died, and his widow married a man named Van der Haas whose brother beat the slaves. He in turn was replaced by a man named Hamilton. There was much unrest on the plantation at this time. Wray who had come to preach had been eventually replaced in 1816 by missionaries John Smith and his wife Jane. In her deposition, Sarah de Wit mentions a Dr Smith, but he appeared to be a medical doctor, and the above John Smith was dead by the time the De Rochemonts immigrated to the U.S. in the 1830's. It is John Smith who is considered the hero of the slave rebellion of 1823 which led ultimately to their emancipation. He lived and preached on Le Resouvenir.

Da Costa speaks of an outbreak of smallpox at Le Resouvenir in 1819. She further mentions a slave Susanna who lived with the plantation manager John Hamilton. She also speaks of slaves in the dry season going to Le Resouvenir for water, for there was a permanent spring there. She mentions a carpenter Peter Hood on the plantation and slaves Cupido, Romeo, and Azor. The focus of the book concerned the events that led up to the revolt of 1823, and there is little about the goings-on of Le Resouvenir other than those that concerned the slaves directly.

In the 1 May 1894 Boston Daily Globe article titled "She Is No Yankee," describing Maria Louisa De Wit, Marie Louise Susette's daughter, that she traces her ancestry back to Francois Baron de Rochemont and Seignieur de la Mothe, at des Bresjores, who died in France in 1661.

Her birth 20 Nov 1786 and death of 30 Nov 1828 date are from family papers which Virginia DeRochemont had in her possession. The marriage betrothal announcement was in the 31 Aug 1805 issue of the Essequebo and Demerary Gazette. In the US lawsuit filing against Frederic deRochemont, it was stated that MLS deRochemont died 6 Dec 1828, so I will use that legal date. The deposition to the lawsuit said that Maria was not in her right mind at the end. Her estate at death included the land and lot at #10 Werken Rust, the wharf and the passage to the road. Frederic sold the real estate and twenty-five of the slaves and placed proceeds in trust for the seven surving children.

Based on Census and death records she was born approximately 1789 in Barnstead.

People online have listed that she was the daughter of George Colbath and Rebecca Milken, but I haven't been able to verify that. According to the census, in 1790, Dependence Colbath's family was the only Colbath family in Barnstead. There were nine people in the household; two males over 16, one under 16, and 6 females (one would have been Eleanor). So, Dependence probably had 2 sons and 5 daughters, although birth records have proved impossible to find. Unforunately, many of Barnstead's records were lost in a fire, so these may have been among them. I believe that Sally was the daughter of Dependnce and Eleanor.

Her husband, Capt. Eben Adams Jr. died 1 Jun 1820 (causes unkown)

Sally Ann, the youngest daughter, was born 13 Jul 1820 (yikes! a month after her husband died!)

On 12 Oct 1821, Sally was granted guardianship of her children following their father's death

The 50-acre farm owned by her husband in Barnstead was auctioned in 1821. His estate was insolvent. (see attached)

The1830 Census notes one Sally Adams and one young female living in Portsmouth. I am assuming this is OUR Sally, but what happened to the other children??

In 1837, Sally Ann, the youngest daughter dies in a tragic drowning in Portsmouth. The newspaper notes her mother and siblings. (see attached)

In 1839, her residence is listed in the city directory as 25 Court St., Portsmouth. Her son Joseph C is also in Portsmouth at this time, living not far away where he had a blacksmith shop at 57 Daniel

In 1860 she was living in Portsmouth with her daughter Mary Jane, and two granddaughters Sally Ann and Mary Jane.

Sally died from "consumption" on 25 Feb 1864. Her burial spot is unknown.

    My questions????

How did Ebenezer die? He was so young!

What happened to Sally and the children after Ebenezer died?

I do NOT yet know enough about probate and land records but I'm guessing that Ebenezer got his land from the original Adams holdings (his great grandfather Rev. Joseph Adams). I'm thinking there would be a record of that?? Rev. Adams will left the land in Barnstead to Dr. Joseph Adams, Ebenezer's father. I can't find a probate record for Dr. Joseph Adams so far, but maybe there is some record of a land transfer to be found.

Also, that after he died, the court must have made some provisions for his children. Did they really leave them homeless and without any support? There must be some record.

Where did Sally come from? Who are her parents?

There are many online trees that connect George Colbath, son of Pitman Colbath, with a marriage to a woman named Jane and 4 daughters. These trees also indicate that George died in Barnstead in 1843. The problem is that I can find zero evidence of any of this other than a Betsey C. (Colbath) Garland, widow, born in 1794, who died in Medland, MA in 1863 of a lightning strike, and her parents are listed as George and Jane.

Now, there is a Betsey C. Colbath among the four daughters attributed to George Colbath, but she was living with her son Isaac Garland in Gilmanton, NH in both 1850 and 1860. It is possible that she had moved to Medland or was visiting Medland in 1863 when this lightning strike killed her, but it is also quite possible that her parents names were listed incorrectly.

Also, I can find no evidence that George, son of Pitman Garland, had any connection with Barnstead. He didn't actually die in Barnstead in 1843, he died in Portsmouth in 1853. Also, if he ever married a woman named Jane, there is no record of it. In fact, the Portsmouth Athenaeum (The Athenæum houses an outstanding collection of documents and artifacts relating to local history. It also preserves what is undoubtedly the finest collection in the state of materials relating to the history of New Hampshire’s only major seaport.) has a record for George (https://athenaeum.pastperfectonline.com/byperson?keyword=Colbath%2C%20George%2C%20c1759-1853) in which it attributes no children and lists him as unmarried (with a question mark).

The other daughters attributed to him are Jane Colbath born in 1782 in Barnstead, who married Daniel Sherburne.

Also a Hannah Colbath born in 1792 who married an Ezra Straw. They moved to Ohio and Hannah died theire in 1886. She was born in Portsmouth according to her obituary, but was married in Barnstead. However, Ezra was born in Barnstead, so this may account for that fact.

Finally, there is my ancestor Sarah Sally Colbath, born in 1789 in Barnstead, who married Ebenezer Adams Jr. of Barnstead in 1805, and died in Portsmouth in 1864. Ebenezer died in 1820 leaving her with young children to raise, and she never remarried, It would have been very difficult for a single mother in those years, so it makes complete sense that she moved her family to Portsmouth where there would have been more work than in Barnstead.

There are a few issues in resolving all of these inconsistencies, and the most significant is that the early vital records from Barnstead were lost in a fire. The second is that most of the early founding families of Barnstead had family ties in the Portsmouth/Newington areas, and I've found a lot of fluidity among them.

In my tree I have left George "married" to Jane, but only for research purposes, and have listed the four daughters I found in online trees. I have also listed Jane and Sarah Sally with Dependence and Eleanor, again, to aid with research, as explained below.

It is my belief that Jane and Sarah Sally were**very** likely the daughters of Dependence Colbath and Eleanor Walker. Dependence is from a branch of the family that was well established in Barnstead. He was, in fact, the only Colbath listed as a head of family in Barnstead in 1790 and the 1790 census lists them as having 2 sons and 5 daughters. We know they had one daughter Lydia, born in 1788 and died (unmarried) in 1832. She is buried with her parents in Barnstead. The two sons, it is believed were John and Dependence/Independence Jr. The names of the other four daughters living in 1790 are lost. As stated, I believe that two of them are Jane and Sarah Sally.

    Notes:

There seems to be some confusion in many online trees regarding two James Nutters.

James Nutter (c 1793-1881) of Portsmouth/Newington married Hannah Langley/Leathers. This James was the son of James Nutter and Elizabeth Seavey.

James Nutter (1795-1881) of Barnstead married Anna Nutter. This James was the son of John Nutter and Elizabeth Dame.

In my media files is a file including all the Nutter births in Barnstead that makes this distinction clear. MY James is the James from Newington/Portsmouth.

In 1830 a family of Jas Natter matching James' family (himself, wife, and 3 daughters in the right age groups) was living in Somersworth.

In 1840: James Nutter living in Newington had a household consisting of 3 sons (matching ages of Wolliam, Charle, and Edwin), a daughter matching the age of Ariadna - Sarah was married and Elizabeth was 19 and possibly on her own), and wife.

In 1850: James Nutter (age 56), a laborer born in NH owned $400 in RE and was in dweling # 777 in Newington, He was living with his wife Hannah (age 57) and 3 males William H (age 23), Charles H. (age 19) and Edwin M (age 15)

in 1860: James Nutter (67) a farm laborer owned RE valed at $750 and was in dwelling #890 in Newington. He was living with his wife Hannah (68) and a female Araidna N. (36)

In 1870: James Nutter (77) a farmer owned RE valued at $1000 and was in dwelling # 77 in Newington. He was living with his wife Hannah (78).

In 1880: James Nutter (86) was living in dwelling #49 in Newington with a female Annette Adams (37) noted as his granddaughter.

I've never found a birth record for James. But given his (supposed) mother's age (born in 1780) and marriage to James Nutter in 1797, I've come to believe that the online date of 1793 for James death is incorrect. I believe he was born in 1797.

James married LEATHERS, Hannah before 1819 in New Hampshire, USA. Notes:

    Update as of 10/24/23

Every online tree I have found have Hannah’s parents listed incorrectly. A transfer of deeds by Abednego Leather’s children and heirs in 1821, make it clear that Hannah is actually the child of Abednego Edwards and Elizabeth Woodward. I have not yet found a birth certificate, but this is the only reasonable explanation of relationships.

    -----

Inconsistency:The Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 asserts that The parents of Martha G. Witherell who died in 1896 at the age of 86 were Joseph Stevens of Lee, NH and Hannah Langley of Nottingham, NH.

    Previous line of research:

I have come to believe that Hannah's maiden name was actually Leathers and not Langley.

The major fact this is based on is the Rockingham County deed Book 233 pp-48-52 in which Hannah is indicated as an heir to Abednego Leather's property. Additionally, her daugther Araiadna's birth record names her Hannah Leathers. We know that many 19th centure Leathers in NH changed their names because of the stigma it carried. Could this be true of Hannah? If so, it seems most likely that she was a daughter of Abednego Leathers (1770-?) and Sarah Sally Langley (1779-?), although in the deed, she is called out as an heir along with Polly, Abednego, Martha, Mehitable, and Charity as an heir. All of these individuals were children of Abednego Leathers (1742 - 1?) and Elizabeth Woodman (1745-1809). Due to birth dates, it seems impossible that she is of this generation, but why would she be the only one of the next generation named?
